I got a call from Alex on Wednesday asking if I was available for a girl's night on Friday. Seems she needs a break from her boyfriend, and was desperate for some time with the ladies. So Alex and Ness came over for pizza and wine on Friday and we headed out to a bar later (can't say which bar - cause it's far too embarassing).

We spent most of the night avoiding creepy men on the dance floor, and the rest of the night on the patio so Alex could smoke (booooo - Ness and I gave her a proper talking to and we're making it our mission to stop her from continuing with the foul habit).

After about an hour, three fairly decent looking young men approached us and offerred to buy us drinks (a rarity in Toronto - they tend to just grope and slobber). So we started chatting and determined that they were from Boston. Once we heard that we were intrigued - we went to Boston last year to visit our friend Andrea, and we had an absolute blast. We tore that town apart. As soon as the guys heard our enthusiasm for their fair city, they got a bit weird. We were asking them about which bars they go to (Boston is a very small town), and about what they like to do there, etc...

After a few moments of awkwardness, it came out that they weren't from Boston at all. They were from Toronto and this was their "story" that they use to try and pick up girls. They were actually two lawyers and an accountant (another likely tale). Just a thought - if you're going to have a story that you play when you go out at night. At least do a bit of research first and have a background tale.

Taste of the Danforth

On Friday night I went to the Taste of the Danforth with my girlfriends. We had some wine at Alex's place (she lives on the Danforth) and then headed over to the festival for some cheap retsina (isn't it all cheap?) and extra garlicky tzatziki.

When I woke up on Saturday morning I really felt like I was going to be sick. All I could taste was garlic. I tried brushing my teeth again and again, but it was coming out of my pores. It was pretty sick.

Ness and I decided to try and get rid of the greek by eating two pounds of ribs on Saturday night. They were good, and I think they did the job they set out to do.

The City of Angels

I was in L.A. a couple of weeks ago for my oldest friend's wedding. Blake and I have known each other since we were about 3 or 4 years old. I couldn't believe it when she called me a few months ago and told me that she was getting married and wanted me to be a bridesmaid. It's all very sweet. She and Michael have been together for ages, and they finally decided to get married.

Blake's sister Alex got married last year at the Dallas Country Club (it was a true Dallas wedding with 300 people and all the glitz of the old TV show). Blake decided that she wanted something more intimate and in her new hometown. So she got married at the Ritz in Marina del Rey. It was really beautiful. She was married outside in a garden under a wrought iron canopy surrounded by flowers. Then the reception was in a ballroom overlooking the marina with a gorgeous terrace all the way around. It was a really amazing setting.

The best part of the whole thing (besides seeing Blake the happiest I've seen her since we were kids and she found out what hair mousse was) was seeing all the people from Dallas that I hadn't seen in at least 10 years. I used to go back to Dallas and visit Blake almost every year - but the last time she was in Dallas permanently was when she was 18.

I got to see the twins that I grew up with (still cute - still look the same actually, so all I see is a couple of little boys when I look at them) but haven't seen since Blake's 18th birthday (exactly 10 years ago from the day I arrived in LA). I got to see the alcoholic ex-roommate of Blake's that I haven't seen since a very drunken night in LA about 5 years ago. I got to see Blake's parents and step-parents, step-grandparents, and aunts and uncles.

It really amazed me seeing Blake's family. They really do look the same as I remember them. I can't believe that they all recognized me without any help at all. I guess I look the same as I did when I was 14... but with a few more lines on my face.

Oh well - it was so great to see everyone and it was the busiest few days I've ever spent anywhere. It was nice seeing people I haven't seen in a while - especially when you meet up again and pick up right where you left off. I remember exactly why I was friends with all of those guys, and now we might even be responsible enough to keep in touch.
