Funny Americans...

I find that the more time I spend in the US, the more of a staunch Canadian that I become...

I'm sure that part of the issue is that I'm hypersensitive to the ridiculous comments that some people make about Canada (such as: "sometimes I forget that there's a whole other country up there"). But it could also be that the United States really IS different from Canada. The mix of people is different, and so is the attitude.

Point 1: So where are all the Asians?? I remember when we first moved to Toronto, I felt the same way about Canada's lack of Mexicans. But now I find that I'm looking all over for some sort of an Asian community. I'm so used to turning a corner and finding Chinatown, and now I'm baffled by the idea that the closest Chinatown is in a sketchy part of the southside. I'm sure that there's another one around, but it's too cold to go our searching for it right now.

Point 2: On the plus side - the Mexican food here is abundant and good. Not quite Texas good, but certainly better than anything I found in the Great White North in the past 14 years.

T&T got married!

So Scott's good friends Tim & Tatiana (now my good friends) got married! They are expecting a baby girl in a few months, so they decided to have a small ceremony now and a larger wedding in the summer.

They waited (probably not on purpose.....but I choose to think that it was) for Scott and I to arrive from Toronto. So off we went to the courthouse with Tim's grandmother, and Tatiana's Dad & family for the ceremony last Friday.

I'm not kidding when I say that there were people there getting married in hockey jerseys and jeans, and then there were people in full wedding garb (with matching bridesmaids and all). Some of the people looked to be about 15 years old - and then one bride was at least 70. It was all in all a pretty interesting experience. The ceremony was in a private room with a judge and it ended up being quite emotional. Funny, didn't cry at my own wedding, but bawled like a baby at T&T's... Guess I wasn't nervous at this one, so I was able to think about what was actually happening.

I'll post photos of the event later (she looked fantastic - she's at the perfect pregnancy stage - obviously pregnant, but not uncomfortable yet).

Chicago is chilly....

So I'm here in Chicago.... arrived on Christmas Day.

Can't believe I'm here actually. I got really sad leaving Toronto - so I'm still in a bit of a depression right now. Soon I'll quit being such a whiny little baby and start to have fun.

Scott has been very nice and forgiving of my lack of motivation. I did manage to get out to K-Mart today for a new shower curtain though. And yesterday we cleaned out the hall closet so that I'll have somewhere to keep my masses of clothes.

I've been having the strangest dreams since I got here - a lot about work - well....my old work I guess. Since I'm technically a housewife right now (that's getting old fast). In one I got escorted out of the building because I came back to work and didn't tell anyone - just started to work. And since I wasn't an employee, I guess I was trespassing....so I was escorted out. It was really embarrassing - even if it was only a dream.

I'll post photos soon of our place - but it's kind of a disaster right now. And I think I have a few photos from New Year's Eve. Scott's company threw two parties at each of the W hotels downtown. The one that we were at was in the hotel that Snoop Dogg was staying at - he was even supposed to stop by after the Bears game - but he just came into the lobby for a few minutes before heading up to his room with his "peeps" (I'm too white to be able to use that word). But a friend did get a wave from his pimp Don Juan...so that's something...

The party was a lot of fun actually, very swanky with lots of really drunk chicks.... That's something that I've noticed is quite different here. The girls get very drunk. Good looking girls all dressed up and looking terrific - but they are eyes rolling to the backs of their heads drunk. At least they're having fun I guess.

Speaking of drunk - it's SO strange to be able to buy booze pretty much anywhere you go. Scott and I were heading over to a friend's place yesterday and needed to grab a bottle of wine - so we stopped in at a drug store - and they had basically every kind of liquor you could imagine.

Think I might head across the street and pick up something for dinner. That's what a good housewife does right?? This whole housewife role involves far too much cleaning and not enough sitting on the couch sipping spritzers for me....
